Medical Transport in Germany: When Does Your Insurance Pay?

Conditions, approval, and process for non-emergency medical taxi rides covered by German statutory health insurance — explained for patients in Flensburg.

A taxi ride to the doctor, dialysis, or rehabilitation can be covered by German statutory health insurance — under specific conditions. We explain when medical transport is approval-free, when you need to apply, and how the process works with KI-Taxi Flensburg.

When does insurance pay?

Statutory health insurance typically covers taxi-based medical transport in these cases:

  • Trips to inpatient treatment (hospital admission or discharge)
  • Outpatient treatment with strict medical necessity — e.g. dialysis, radiation or chemotherapy
  • Patients with disability ID (codes aG, Bl, H) or care level 3 with permanent mobility limitation, 4 or 5
  • Emergency transport and inter-hospital transfers

In all other cases, prior approval by the insurance provider is required.

What you need for approval

  1. Medical transport prescription (Form 4) — issued by your treating physician
  2. Insurance approval — for non-exempt rides, obtain before the first trip
  3. Insurance card — bring it on every ride

Tip: Have your doctor note the precise diagnosis and therapy type on the prescription. This significantly speeds up processing at the insurance provider.

Co-payment: 10 % — minimum €5, maximum €10

Even for approved medical rides, statutory insurance holders pay a 10 % co-payment — minimum €5, maximum €10 per one-way trip. Patients who have reached their annual co-payment limit are exempt.
